It is no secret that West Virginia is a dangerous place to work. While the dangers of coal mining are well-known, transportation and construction are also very dangerous. A recent report confirms just how dangerous working in West Virginia can be.

The report by the U.S. Department of Labor indicates that there were 43 workplace fatalities in West Virginia in 2011 (complete data for 2012 has not been compiled yet). This number actually represents a significant decrease in fatalities from the previous year, and is the third lowest total since statistics started being gathered in 1992. The mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction industry had the highest number with ten deaths, while the transportation, warehousing, and construction sectors each tied for second with seven fatalities.

While it is encouraging that the number of fatalities decreased, even one fatality is too many, because the loss of that life affects so many other people. The loss of a primary breadwinner can financially devastate a family for years. Further, the report only discusses fatalities. It does not report on workplace injuries, which can also prevent someone from providing for their loved ones.

Workplace injuries can be difficult to document and many employers seek to hide them to avoid liability. If you or a loved one have suffered a workplace injury, a West Virginia workplace injury lawyer can help you investigate the injury, get the medical treatment you need, and receive compensation for lost wages.
